For an unplanned pregnancy in the second trimester, there are three main options to consider: parenting, adoption, and surgical abortion.

As you enter your second trimester of pregnancy, which is between 13 and 26 weeks gestation, you have several options to consider. It’s essential to take the time to make an informed decision that is right for you rather than rushing into a choice.

Keep reading to understand better what each option may entail regarding cost and local resources. At the Pregnancy Help Center, we offer a no-cost Options Consultation where you can learn more about each pregnancy choice and the support services available to assist you.

What Are All of My Pregnancy Options?

Medical abortion, which involves taking drugs to terminate the pregnancy, is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation. This means a surgical abortion procedure, which is performed at a clinic or hospital, would be the only method available.

Choosing to have an abortion is a serious decision that comes with side effects and risks. You’ll want to learn about this procedure before making a pregnancy decision.

The remaining options are adoption, where you can choose the family you want for your child and what levels of privacy you desire (such as continuing a relationship with the child or choosing not to disclose any of your details).

Parenting a child yourself comes with unique challenges and rewards. It requires a significant emotional, physical, and financial commitment, as you would be responsible for providing all the child’s needs, from food and clothing to healthcare and education.

While parenthood can also be incredibly rewarding, it’s essential to carefully consider whether you have the resources, support system, and readiness to take on the role of a parent. If you are interested in this option, the Pregnancy Help Center will provide resources for free parenting programs and continual emotional support.

How Much Do These Options Cost?

The cost of parenting and childbirth can depend on several factors, such as your healthcare coverage. If your income is below a certain threshold, you may qualify for Medicaid in Kentucky.

Medicaid provides comprehensive coverage for pregnant women, including prenatal care, delivery, and 12 months of postpartum care, regardless of income changes during that time.

In Kentucky, abortion is currently banned. Surgical abortions performed outside of the state can cost up to $2,000 or more, not including travel, medication, and follow-up care expenses.

If you’re interested in adoption, the adoption agency may be able to cover health and living expenses if a Kentucky court approves them as reasonable and necessary.
